On-Site or Out of Sight: why splicing escalator handrails on-site is better than ordering continuous rail.

Until recently there have been few options in the south-central United States for on-site vulcanizing of escalator handrails. As a result, many companies have had to pay the exorbitant costs of companies located outside of the United States, or cope with the uncertainties and expense of either using private contractors or resorting to continuous rail.

But now, Escalator Technology Corporation has established a region specifically devoted to the south-central United States (see more here).

So why should a service company opt for on-site splicing rather than continuous rail? Here are just eight of the reasons:

  • Labor cost savings. Continuous rail may take three technicians 12 hours or more to install, depending upon the unit. In some cases it may take nearly a week.
  • Decreased downtime. On-site vulcanization takes only 4 – 5 hours per rail to complete.
  • Decreased risk of mismeasurement. With only a few centimeters of “play,” it is easy to mis-measure a rail, which may only be discovered after the unit is down and the old rail rendered unuseable. On-site splicing makes the final measurement on site, as open rail includes excess material.
  • On-site vulcanizing offers the possibility of repair if an incorrect new rail has been ordered. More frequently than you might think, a customer may order the wrong handrail, and our technician is able to perform an emergency repair on the old rail. If continuous rail had been used in these cases, the unit would have been down for days instead of hours, and costs would have skyrocketed.
  • On-site vulcanizing offers definable, fixed costs, removing the guess work from labor and parts estimates for continuous rail.
  • On-site vulcanizing joins the rail using the very same equipment used when a continuous rail is joined on the factory floor.
  • Escalator Technology Corporation works closely with only the best handrail supplier, utilizing the highest quality materials. We can assist you in determining what to order, and a timeframe for installation.
  • With ETC you are not dealing with an unknown private contractor with no particular standards for quality and customer satisfaction, but a reputable technology company with rigorous standards of customer service. Our factory trained technicians are clean-cut, polite, and focused on the client/customer relationship.
